Based on three separate interviews, Gurshad Shaherman traces the lives of his mother and two aunts, all born in Iran in the 1960s. Two of them went into exile in Europe in the 1990s, while the third stayed. The director invites the three of them to come together on stage to tell their stories and re-enact snatches of a past that is both shared and geographically fragmented.
Dubbed by Franco-Iranian actresses who take charge of their stories, the women of Gurshad Shaherman’s family do not speak: it is through their bodies that they communicate their history. The viewer is invited to a storytelling session, immersed in an open-air restaurant in the north of Tehran. French mingles with Azeri, the forbidden language in which this family was raised, and memories mingle with song and music.
In telling their stories, these three women also recount half a century of wars and revolutions that they have lived through from near and far, making these stories a bridge between individual and collective history, between the intimate and the political.
