What is an “ordeal”? When justice eludes men, it’s the last resort: God’s judgement through a physical ordeal. Witnessing the failure of governance in Lebanon since the end of the civil war, four actors create their own trial by ordeal for one night. They defend an intimate heritage that has been destroyed and is threatened to be erased forever. Against the backdrop of Henrik Ibsen’s The Pretenders to the Crown, Chrystèle Khodr questions her own position and that of her generation in relation to the ruins and legacy of the war and Lebanon’s history. The key events of the 90s intersect with fiction to allow the actors to escape their victim status.

And to free themselves from the patriarchal power that assigns men to construction and war, in a context where bodies suffer from the failure to build a state. In the field of ruins where the play is set, the most burning question remains that of justice: is it still possible in Lebanon? And if so, how can we take action to bring it about?
